So here I am at Hofstra, and I am blogging.

So here I am at Hofstra, and I am blogging. Writing online makes me feel safe, hidden, and free. I feel as though I am writing without consequences. Writing online makes me feel as though no one actually knows who I am. As though I can write anything I please without being judged or ridiculed. I feel as though writing online is a lot easier and less stressful than writing for a class or a specific audience because it is solely for you, and not for a particular audience. However, hiding behind your computer can be crippling if done too often. Technology has taken away our generation's ability to engage in face to face contact, and is crippling many talented artists by familiarizing them with the ease and lack of stress that is associated with blogging, or writing on the internet.

  1. Melanie I actually feel the opposite about online writing with regards to feeling safe. There is a certain comfort though about being able to post your thoughts safely from behind a screen, but I think that my writing is now more open to the public. I prefer writing directly to a person about my thoughts rather than posting them on the internet for the world to see. For me writing is a private thing, it is something in which I can post my ideas and share with others, but not all others. I do not like to share my ideas with the world on topics because if I dont know someone well enough to tell them my ideas personally, then I sure do not want someone who I do not even know to be able to comment on my personal ideas. As to what you said about our generation being crippled because of technology, I think you are absolutely right. Our generation has lost immense amounts of communication skills because of all the technology we have around us. Text messaging is the biggest reason because this one invention has eliminated the need for phone calls in most situations. Technology has really only driven us apart communication wise.

  3. I don't know how blogging is hidden unless no one knows your blog exists. That's not the case as two classes are reading this. This blog does have consequences because it's being graded. Also, isn't hiding behind a computer the same as hiding behind pen and paper? No one's going to criticize you while writing with pen and paper. But then again, this is your personal opinion so no one's wrong.

  4. Blogging online is definately a free feeling but I wouldn't consider it to be hidden. Writing online is a very public thing, open to anyone's eyes who use the internet. Blogs have a huge unlimited audience compared to a class audience when sharing a paper. I think the fact that blogs are able to have an unlimited audience is a huge advantage though.
It is definately true that technology has made things less personal over the years and many people would choose to send an email or text to someone rather than talking to them face to face. This is a growing problem, but I don't think blogging has as big of an influence on that as texting or emailing does.
